Choose Existing or New Site Development Option
Discusses considerations for developing against an existing site or a new site.
When developing custom sites or pages, you can make changes to an existing site or build a new site. Before beginning development, you should consult with the seller to determine the best option and to ensure the seller is aware of any potential impact to their site or account.
Considerations for developing against an existing site
- Changes are reflected on publish and therefore can have a more immediate impact to an in-use online store.
- Best option if the seller wants to add a custom page to an existing site, such as a new home page.
- Required if the seller doesn’t want to switch to a multi-site account.
Considerations for developing against a new site
- Reduces risk to an existing site by isolating it from changes made during development and testing.
- Recommended option when building a custom site for an existing Square Online seller.
-
If configured as a single-site account (default), the seller must switch to a multi-site account.
The Square Online dashboard configuration for site and catalog management is permanently changed after switching to a multi-site account. For example, the UI changes to allow switching between sites, managing shared and site-specific features and settings, and setting site availability for items in the item library. For more information, see Manage Multiple Websites with Square Online.

When the new site is ready, the original domain can be transferred to the new site. To do so, set the domain on the existing site to something else, set the domain on your new site to the original domain, and publish the new site. If you need to revert changes, point the original domain back to the original site and republish. For more information, see Connect Your Domain to Square Online
When you no longer need the original site, it can be deleted.
